Epidaurus: Theater

Local Guide

Once again, we had a local guide walk us through this theater and museum site.  We were able to get right in when we got there, no waiting in lines, and she had access to other locations that the average customer would not be able to see.  Inside the site, she was able to efficiently explain the relics and put all of the pieces together for us.  I cannot imagine going through Greece without a guide telling me what to focus on!  All of our guides, and especially our many guide, was highly qualified and had developed a true art to guiding tourists through important Greek artifacts.

Imagination

Almost all of these amazing sites have been well preserved, which makes it fun to truly imagine a theater like this being completely sold out 3,000 years ago!  All of our guides invite us to think about this and put the pieces together.  They also used this to help us understand the unrest that Greece went through, and where it is leading them to today.  This tour is not just a history lesson, but a lesson in what is happening today!

Lasting Memory

The theater has a cool feature: it was perfectly designed so that actors on stage did not need to use any microphones (because, of course, they did not have any).  No one is allowed to sing or recite anything on stage, since there were instances of people defiling the stage with harsh words and protests.  But, we were allowed to listen to the sound of our guide clapping!  You could hear it clearly from all the way at the top!  The acoustics of this ancient theater are incredible!
