German Student Perspective

This post is written from the perspective of a student in my German class field placement. She is a senior at Brookfield Central (commutes to Brookfield East for German 5). It is fun to be able to help teach a class with some of my friends as the students of that class.

The student really enjoys learning German, and likes how her teacher is very interesting and funny. The student is always very prepared for class, and makes sure to complete all of the assignments before the next class. The homework is most useful for her when she sees how it connects to the lesson they are learning.

During class, she appreciates all of the online tools the teacher uses. Her favorites are Peardeck, Kahoot, and Quizlet. She likes how some of them are based on competition within the class, but likes how some programs have no competition, and she can just concentrate on the material. Especially for German stories and poems, she likes videos and pictures. She enjoys drawing out stories, rather than translating them with words. Lastly, she has mixed feelings about her small class size. She has told me how the class size has allowed her to learn more German in one year than in many previous years, when she was in a larger class. Sometimes, she says, things get awkward during discussions, since people run out of things to say, and there are less people to bounce ideas off of. However, she enjoys how the small class is able to stay on task a lot longer, and she feels free to ask questions to the teacher and other students she feels comfortable with.
